Google splits its eighth-generation TPU strategy between training and inference

TPU 8t and TPU 8i use workload-specific designs for large-scale model training and latency-sensitive agent inference.

Google has introduced two eighth-generation TPU designs instead of asking one chip to cover every stage of the AI lifecycle. TPU 8t is aimed at large training workloads, while TPU 8i is tuned for inference where agent response time and interactive latency are central concerns.

This separation reflects the different constraints of training and serving. Training rewards large memory pools, fast collective communication, and sustained utilization. Interactive inference puts more pressure on scheduling, time-to-first-token, token latency, and performance per watt under changing request loads.

Why it matters: Specialized accelerators are moving beyond a simple training-versus-inference label. As agent workloads grow, infrastructure design will increasingly distinguish batch processing, long-context serving, tool-using agents, and real-time interaction.
